Introduction

The global financial system is entering a new phase of multipolar restructuring. Rising geopolitical competition, a fundamental shift in globalisation from an efficiency-driven model to one prioritising security and resilience, and the rapid advance of technologies such as artificial intelligence are transforming capital flows, monetary systems, and cross-border resource allocation.

Against this backdrop, China is accelerating the reallocation of capital toward “new quality productive forces,” while steadily advancing the internationalisation of the Renminbi. At the same time, the return of Chinese concept stocks and a new wave of technology IPOs are driving high-quality assets toward markets with stronger institutional certainty and global connectivity. Hong Kong is emerging as a key beneficiary, entering a critical window for capital market revaluation.

In 2026, the city stands at the centre of this global reconfiguration. It is uniquely positioned to support the international expansion of Chinese enterprises while serving as a vital bridge between global capital and regulatory systems. More than a traditional financial hub, Hong Kong is evolving into a global platform for capital allocationpowered by finance and innovation and defined by its role as both a “super-connector” and “super value-adder.”

This moment raises urgent questions: How can Hong Kong consolidate and enhance its position as a leading international financial centre? How can it leverage China’s capital reallocation and a surge in technology listings to drive industrial upgrading? And how can it strengthen its role as a gateway for Chinese companies going global through institutional innovation and regulatory alignment?

On May 22, 2026, CEIBS will convene leading voices from business, government, and academia under the theme “Where Capital Flows Next: Hong Kong in a Rewired Global Economy.” Together, they will examine geopolitical dynamics, capital flow trends, Renminbi internationalisation, and Hong Kong’s future as a global hub for finance and innovation—offering clear, forward-looking perspectives in an era of uncertainty.
