In Conversation with Mr Henry Fan, Chairman of Hospital Authority
Join the chamber for a thought-provoking and insightful conversation featuring Mr. Henry Fan, Chairman of the Hospital Authority (HA), and Hanif Kanji, Chair of BritCham Healthcare Committee. In this engaging event, Mr. Fan will share his thoughts on various areas related to the future direction of the HA, going beyond their published strategy and building programme.
The discussion will focus on exploring the biggest challenges ahead for Hong Kong's healthcare system. Topics to be covered include: prevention strategies for lifestyle health challenges like obesity and diabetes; addressing health challenges resulting from demographic shifts, and enhancing dementia care in the face of the "silver tsunami."
Drawing from the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Fan will also shed light on the HA's plans to tackle staffing issues, mental health challenges, and the utilization of big data and AI in healthcare. Collaboration opportunities between the private sector and the HA in monetizing this valuable asset will also be discussed.
The event will provide an opportunity for the audience to actively participate through a Q&A session, allowing for further exploration of key topics.

About the speaker
Mr. Fan graduated from The University of Hong Kong with an honours degree in Economics and Business Management and also holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Beijing. He is a Barrister-at-Law in Hong Kong, and in England and Wales as well as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of California, U.S.A.
Mr. Fan has over 30 years of experience in business management and also practised as a barrister in Hong Kong. He was a director and then managing director of CITIC Pacific Limited (now known as CITIC Limited) from 1990 and 1992 respectively to 2009. In addition, Mr. Fan was a deputy chairman of Cathay Pacific Airways Limited from 1997 to 2009 and an independent non-executive director of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited from 2003 to 2009. He is currently an independent non-executive director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited and HKR International Limited. Mr. Fan is also the managing director of Hong Kong Glory Limited, a family investment company.
Mr. Fan has a long record of public service in Hong Kong. He was a non-official member of the Executive Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Chairman of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority, and a non-executive director of the Securities and Futures Commission. Currently, he is the Chairman of the Hospital Authority as well as a member of the board of directors of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority.
About the moderator
Hanif is the founder and CEO of Avicenna Healthcare Group (formerly Sinophi Healthcare), a company which invests in and manages hospitals in China.
Earlier in his career, Hanif qualified as a doctor and practiced in the UK. He then spent eleven years in investment banking in corporate finance, derivatives and asset management with financial institutions in London, New York, Paris and Hong Kong.
Hanif founded Sinophi Healthcare in 2004 as a consulting firm. In 2010 Sinophi’s focus changed to principal where the company focused on its current strategy of working with PE firms to invest in and manage hospitals in China – bringing improvements in clinical and operational outcomes through workflow improvements and deployment of technology to enhance performance and returns. Hanif is active in Health Tech, trying to figure out ways to safely apply new and proven technologies from IoT, Cloud, Blockchain, Robotics, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to clinical practice.
Hanif graduated in medicine from Cambridge University and received his MBA from The Wharton School, USA.
