About the speaker

We are delighted to welcome Charles Li, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited to speak in our Captains of Industry series, sponsored by KPMG.

Charles Li has served as the chief executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEx) since 2010. In this role, Mr. Li has orchestrated some of the most significant strategic initiatives in HKEx’s history, including its expansion into fixed income, currency, and commodities through the acquisition of the London Metal Exchange in 2012 and the launch of OTC Clear in 2013, as well as enhanced mutual market access with Mainland China.

Mr. Li’s career in financial services spans over 20 years. Before joining HKEx, he was chairman of JPMorgan Chase China, prior to which he was president of Merrill Lynch China. Before joining Merrill Lynch in 1994, Mr. Li practiced law in New York with Davis Polk & Wardwell and Brown & Wood.

Before moving to the United States for his studies, Mr. Li worked as an offshore oil worker in the North China Sea and as a newspaper editor and reporter for China Daily.
